AI Credits vs Tokens: What’s the Difference?

AI credits are a payment or allowance layer. Tokens are a usage meter used by most LLM APIs. Requests are another meter (one HTTP call). There is no universal credits-to-tokens formula because each product defines a “credit” differently — prepaid dollars, image packs, or chat-plan extra usage.

Direct answer

Tokens measure how much text (and sometimes other media) an API processes — typically billed per million input and output tokens. AI credits and API credits are how you prepay, grant, or cap that spend: a Console balance, a startup grant, or a consumer app pack. A ChatGPT Plus seat is neither tokens nor API credits; it is a subscription allowance on a different product.

If a landing page quotes “1,000 credits” without saying which product, which model, and whether a credit is $1 of API spend or one image, you cannot convert it to tokens. Use the comparison table below, then the three worked examples. All numeric examples are illustrative, not a market rate.

Units side by side

Unit | What it measures | Typical home | Converts to dollars?

AI credits | Product allowance or prepaid pack | Consumer apps, some image/video tools | Only if the vendor publishes a $ / credit rate

API credits | Developer prepaid balance or grant | OpenAI Platform, Anthropic Console, Gemini API billing | Usually yes — the balance is in USD against list prices

Tokens | Input/output processed by a model | LLM APIs | Yes, via that model’s $ / 1M token price

Requests | Number of API calls | Rate limits and some embedding APIs | Sometimes a minimum fee per request

Do not treat the four rows as interchangeable labels for the same invoice.

Why there is no universal credits-to-tokens conversion

Vendors reuse the word credit for unrelated meters. One Midjourney-style credit is not one OpenAI API dollar, and neither is a Claude extra-usage credit. Tokenizers also differ: the same English sentence is not the same token count on GPT, Claude, and Gemini.

A conversion is only valid when you hold (1) the product’s definition of a credit, (2) the model, (3) input vs output mix, and (4) the official price on a dated source. If any of those is missing, do not publish a formula.

Example: API prepaid credits

Illustrative only. Suppose a Console shows $20 of API credits and a model lists $0.15 / 1M input and $0.60 / 1M output. A job of 1M input + 1M output tokens would cost $0.75 at those list rates, so $20 covers about 26 such jobs before other fees. Change the model or the input/output mix and the count changes. Confirm live prices on API Credits and the vendor’s pricing page. Last verified for this method: 2026-08-18.

Example: consumer AI tool credits

Illustrative only. A drawing app might sell 100 credits where 1 credit = 1 standard image. That pack does not buy GPT-4o tokens. Check remaining credits in the app’s billing UI, not in an API Console. Browse Free AI Credits when you want app-tier allowances rather than developer wallets.

Example: startup cloud credits

Illustrative only. A Google Cloud or startup grant might be $1,000 of cloud spend. Gemini API billing can draw from that project, but Play Store gift balance cannot. Apply on the official program page listed on AI Startup Credits and Google AI Credits. Last verified for this routing: 2026-08-18.

A safe forecasting formula

For APIs: monthly $ ≈ (input tokens / 1M × input $) + (output tokens / 1M × output $), plus image or video unit prices if those apply. Mark the result illustrative until you paste official rates from the vendor page you opened today.

For credit packs: monthly credits ≈ tasks × credits_per_task, using the vendor’s published task table — not a token estimate.
