Claude Credits Explained

Claude credits can mean extra usage on a paid Claude plan, Claude Code billing, prepaid Claude API balance, or a promotional grant. They are not one wallet. This page routes you to the right product, then links the API pricing hub if you are a developer.

What “Claude credits” usually means

Claude credits is a search phrase, not a single Anthropic product. On paid Claude plans it often means extra usage credits you can buy after the included usage limit. In Claude Code it can mean plan usage, extra usage, or a Console API key. On the Claude API / Workbench it means prepaid API credits billed in dollars against token usage. Promotional or startup credits are a fourth path with their own eligibility.

If you mix those wallets, extra usage on claude.ai will not refill an API key, and an API prepaid balance will not raise your chat plan limit. Pick the product first, then follow the official Settings or Console page for that product.

Choose your Claude product

Claude web/app (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise): consumer chat with included usage and optional extra usage credits.

Claude Code: the coding CLI/IDE flow. Billing follows how you signed in — a Claude subscription, extra usage credits, or an API key from the Anthropic Console. Those are not the same meter.

Claude API / Workbench: developer prepaid credits and token prices. Use Claude API Credits for model rates and developer recharge.

Team / Enterprise: org-level seats, spend controls, and admin billing. Check with your admin before buying extra usage yourself.

Subscription limits vs extra usage credits

Paid Claude plans include a usage allowance. When that allowance is exhausted, Anthropic may offer extra usage credits so you can keep working without waiting for the next reset. Extra usage is optional; it is not the same as raising the plan’s included limit, and it does not automatically mean you are on the API.

Community threads often report extra usage draining faster than expected, or extra usage charging while a plan allowance still looked available. Treat those as confusion signals, not as Anthropic policy. Confirm remaining included usage and extra-usage settings in the product’s official usage page before you buy more.

Claude Code credits

Claude Code billing depends on login. A Pro or Max subscription can cover Claude Code within that plan’s usage rules. Extra usage credits can extend work after the included limit. An Anthropic Console API key bills API credits instead — token prices, prepaid balance, and Console spend limits.

Do not assume “I paid for Claude” funds every Claude Code session. If the tool asked for an API key, you are on API billing. If it asked you to sign in with claude.ai, you are on plan usage (and maybe extra usage credits).

Claude API credits (summary)

Claude API credits are prepaid Console/Workbench balance for token-based API calls. They are for developers, not a replacement for a Claude chat plan. Model list prices, relays, and developer recharge live on Claude API Credits. This page does not reprint the full price table.

How to buy or enable credits

AI Credits does not sell Anthropic credits and will never ask for your Claude password or API key.

Paid-plan extra usage: follow Anthropic’s usage-credits article and the in-product purchase or enable flow for your plan.

API prepaid credits: add a payment method and credits in the Anthropic Console billing pages.

Startup or partner credits: apply on the official Anthropic or partner form listed on AI Startup Credits — not on a coupon farm.

Where to check balance and spend limits

Claude web/app and extra usage: product Settings / Usage for the logged-in consumer account.

Claude API: Anthropic Console Billing and usage dashboards for the organization that owns the API key.

Those screens do not share a balance. Checking the chat app will not show Console prepaid credits, and Console will not show extra usage on a Max plan.

Set spend limits on the same surface that bills you. Last verified: 2026-08-18.

Do Claude credits expire?

There is no single expiry rule for every Claude credit type, plan, or region. Extra usage credits, prepaid API credits, and promotional grants can each carry different validity windows. Anthropic’s help articles and the billing UI for that product are the source of truth on the day you check.

This page does not invent a universal “credits never expire” or “credits always expire in 12 months” claim. Open the official article for your product and note the date you verified it.

Credits vs tokens

Credits are a payment or allowance layer: extra usage packs, prepaid API dollars, or grants. Tokens are how Claude API usage is measured (input and output). There is no universal credits-to-tokens conversion that works for chat plans, Claude Code, and the API at once.

What to do next

If you use Claude in the browser or Claude Code on a subscription, stay on this page and Anthropic’s usage-credit articles. If you ship software against the Claude API, open Claude API Credits and Manage API Credits. If you are fundraising or in a startup program, open AI Startup Credits.

Community posts about extra-usage speed are useful for knowing what people get stuck on. Price, eligibility, and expiry still come from Anthropic, not from Reddit.
